SkyGypsies.com was the Aerotrekking adventure company John McAfee created when he built his 157 acre ranch in Rodeo New Mexico. He spent 11.5 million dollars building the mansion, the aircraft hangars, a store called Chiricahua Mountain Outfitters and a coffee shop called Sky Gypsy Cafe. Unfortunately for him he ended up selling the whole thing at auction a few years later for 1.6 million dollars.

There is a website by Tom Clynes who has posted 71 pictures from the SkyGypsies days called Aerotrekking with John McAfee.

In late 2006, John McAfee’s Aerotrekking Dream known as The Sky Gypsies took a tragic turn for the worse. His 22-year old nephew Joel Bitow was flying 61-year old passenger Robert Gilson and tragically veered into the side of a canyon wall killing both of them instantly. Mr. Gilson’s family launched a $5 million dollar lawsuit against McAfee, citing Bitow’s lack of piloting experience as the cause of the crash. There is speculation that this and the Lehman Investments triggered John’s downfall and led him to flee to Belize trying to avoid a judgement in the case.

The 157 acre property in Rodeo, New Mexico that john McAfee spent $11.5 million to buy and develop. It fetched roughly $1.6 million at auction, including vintage automobiles, ultralight aircraft, multiple runways, 4 aircraft hangars, an outfitter store and a coffee shop cafe … the property is now known as The Painted Pony Resort.
